Trump never cared about the presidency or serving the American people, and that was clear from the start. But he did care (and does care) for the hype of being president. Being in a position of privilege could get him out of all sorts of (financial) trouble (or otherwise).
The trouble for America won't stop once Trump is out of the office. Trump knew what people wanted to hear, and he gave it to them. They listened. And they interpreted (maybe in their own ways). And they stormed the Capitol.
What is America going to do with the 70 million people who listened to him? Changing a President doesn't change the fact that millions of people don't really believe in the American Democracy anymore.
Trump is famous for taking rash decisions and not caring about consequences. Now consequences are finally catching up to him. I don't think he was entirely conscious of the fact that people would go so far as to storm the Capitol in Washington.
He just wanted to display power, which is his favorite thing to do and the only thing he really cares about. But this "movement" of his, now has a life of its own. And we will see some of that expressing itself one way or another on January 20th, when Biden swears in as president.
During the pandemic, United States experienced civil unrest from left and right, in all kinds of ways, from BLM to the Capitol breach.
The next presidency will have a very hard Rubik's cube to solve, to calm things down, and break even. Is that even possible? Well, it's certainly going to be interesting to observe.
