And yes, it's official. David Fincher is all about to direct a remake of the original Swedish film version, based on Stieg Larsson's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo".
Finally, the United States and Britain are waking up to the phenomenon. It's only this week that the film is being released there, while we (Sweden and the rest of Europe) have already watched the whole "Millenium" trilogy.
When I watched Niels Arden Oplev's "Män som hatar kvinnor" a few months ago, I was so enthusiastic that I bought the book instantly.
There I discovered another Lisbeth Salander, a protagonist that is a mystery even to herself, sometimes. What the films don't capture, compared to the books, is Lisbeth's extreme and unusual intelligence, her ability to do math equations just for the hell of it, and her extremely practical spirit.
What the films do manage to pass to the audience, thanks to Noomi Rapace's powerful and realistic performance, is Lisbeth's spirit: her anger and her fighting-against-all-odds attitude.
It's great to be able, finally, to read and watch Noomi Rapace explaining how she worked for the role- when the film first came out in Greece I couldn't find a single interview. Now the web is full of them because of the U.S. & British promotion.
And I can't really say how happy I am that David Fincher is interested to do a remake. It may be the first time in my life that I am actually happy someone is making a remake of a film! I am dying to watch what he can come up with- and I hope the whole trilogy is remade into something even better than "The Girl who played with fire" and "The Girl who kicked the Hornet's nest" because these last two installments can't really catch up with the first one in quality, which is a shame. Daniel Alfredson who directed Millenium 2 & 3 just isn't such a strong directorial force as his Danish predecessor.
I am just wondering who could play Lisbeth better than Rapace. I think to find a better protagonist is almost impossible!
Noomi Rapace went through a huge transformation for this role, and I really think newcomer Carey Mulligan (that's being discussed for the role) might be a little be soft for hardcore Lisbeth! Anyway I have full faith to David Fincher and his abilities and I really can't wait to see who's gonna be his choice for the role!
Later, dudes.
Update: 01/04/2010 - I hope it's not an April Fool's Day joke: David Fincher will direct the film and is apparently looking for a newcomer for the protagonist's role. Empire Online edition has confirmed that, and commented: "Carey Mulligan's name was bandied about recently, but Fincher is apparently keen to find an unknown. Shooting is pencilled in for September, so somebody's big break is just around the corner..."
