I just come from now from seing "Strella". I didn't read your article yet, I want to sum up my own impressions first.
But I give you one clue : I loved it!

As someone said in " I-don't-know-which-film" : I'll be back ! (to discuss)

Ok.
So you also think that it's a good movie... but I have to make you speak about it, so this my question :
do you think that this film is about transgender ?

artemis είπε...

yes, it is. it's definitely about being transgender among other things. and it poses the question: does a change of the sex of the person, really change the person per se? or just the way that people perceive it?

I don't agree at all.
;)
Nothing is said about transexuality, but family things.
Even if the look upon it is generous, there is no discussion about it : the father accepts it -but of course don't accept love with his child - people around Strella are all transgenders.
I think that it's only a background, a rehearsal of ancien greek tragedy with only men as protagonistes, playing female characters.

isn't it ?

I know that P. Koutras wanted to talk about transgenders, but he just lived it, not talked about it nor questionned it. Nothing is said about the social context and disapproval of the greek society.
And it's good for transgenders. It's good because everything seems in the current life and not outcast or labelled "mad people".

In my enthousiasm for this film
I also did an article about.
;)

@ sophie: while I see the points you make in your analysis (which is excellent) I do think that the crucial question when the problem of the incest is posed, is the question that I already refered to: "does a change of the sex of the person, really change the person per se? or just the way that people perceive it?" our answer as viewers (and the answer of the director) is positive. This is the reason why we accept the transgression as a minor fault. As Strella shouts when her father accuses her of incest, she doesn't look like she used to look, and she didn't feel that person as her father. Really, that's what it's all about.

I think that at the moment of the act, she doesn't feel him like her father, but the love she has for him seems rather close to a son for his father, it's deep and not sexual. They don't have sex after they know about eachother, and this christmas is a normal family one.
Or perhaps I don't want to admit this new relationship as you describe it...

@ sophie (aka Dornac) maybe you don't want to accept the fact that now Strella is half a woman.

the fact that she is emotionally a woman (represented by the upper half of the body) and anatomically still male (lower half of the body) also represents the duality of this committed "sin". It's a sin but also it isn't.

What is also interesting, is, we could analyse this Oedipal relationship as a reversal of the original Oedipal curse: in this case the son does not kill the father, but performs incest with his father.

The fact that he is anatomically half female poses another interesting aspect of the problem of the incest. In this case, it's the son that also represents his own mother - in this case he is half his mother, half himself.

Still another way that we could look at it, it would be as a redemption of Oepipus's original murder. The incest is only temporary and superficial. It's the act of love that brings back the whole family - the fragmented family that was destroyed by murder and sin.

In this case we accept the fact of love as sacred per se- at least a part of it. The fragmented Strella (who represents both son and mother) is the agent of change, the vessel that brings back together mother, father and son.

Nai.
in taxi... endaxei.
You thought about it further than I did.
You are right to think about severals interpretations, that's how a work can be considered as a very good one.
