ARTEMIS By Gerard De Nerval

ARTEMIS By Gerard De Nerval

La Treizième revient... C’est encor la première ;
Et c’est toujours la seule, — ou c’est le seul moment ;

Aimez qui vous aima du berceau dans la bière ;

ARTEMIS (In english)

The Thirteenth is back ... She's still the first,
and is still the only - or is it the one time:
for thou art queen, thou! the first or the last?
Are you king, you the sole or last lover?

... Love the one who loved you in the cradle of the coffin
The one I loved still loves me dearly:
It is death - or the dead one... O delight! O torture!
The rose that she holds is the Hollyhock.

The Neapolitan Saint in hands full of fire,
Rose with a purple heart, flower of St. Gudule*:
Have you found your cross in the desert of the skies?

White Roses, fall! you insult our gods,
Fall, white ghostw from the sky that is burning:
- The Saint of the abyss is more sacred to me!

γιατι εσυ βασιλεύεις ω εσύ! η πρώτη ή η τελευταία;
Είσαι συ βασιλιάς, είσαι o μόνoς ή ο τελευταίος εραστής;

Έχεις βρεi το σταυρό σου στην ερημιά του ουρανού;

*Saint Gudule was the niece of St. Gertrude of Nivelles, and she died in 712.
The painting is by SEBASTIANO RICCI called "Diana and Callisto" [1712-6]
Thanks to Sophie for finding the Diamanda Gallas song "Artemis" on youtube!

Thank you too, it was such a good idea to translate the poem of Gerard de Nerval, "El desdichado", "le prince à la tour abolie", he is one of the biggest poet of the 19th century in France.
And Diamanda... ahh... (sigh)

Even if he's French, I can't say I know him. I'm not really good with classic litterature. It's not really what I go for.

@sophie ;)
@ alex : I am not really into classic literature anymore as well, but I decided to go on with the post anyway because of the "relevance" of the theme with my blog identity.

Yes, let's talk about Artemis. So many things to say about her.
Isn't she the goddess of Lesbians ?
Zeus had to change himself into Artemis to seduce Callisto and make love with her... that's THE message of the hidden identity of Artemis!
;)

well, interesting subject! this part of the myth is usually hushed. Artemis is considered to be the goddess of virginity and the usual version of the story is that Kallisto swore to preserve her virginity for as long as she remained in the company of the goddess. After she was seduced by the god Zeus, she tried to keep the fact hidden but her condition was eventually revealed during a bath. So, Artemis, in her fury, transformed Kallisto into a bear.
Artemis was the protector of young girls in general as well as virginity. I suppose a goddess needed sex anyway so if not having sex with men... what would be the other alternative? The word women comes to mind.

Several versions of the story here:

Yes, indeed, in the bath they might have clean their body...
How do you call this thing when inconsciently in all the minds, even in the women's mind, everybody thinks that if there is no penis there is no sex, as if women's didn't really exist and as if sexuality couldn't exist without men (because between men nobody ever questions the fact that they have sexuality together) ? Do you call it phallocentrism?

artemis είπε...

@sophie: yes this thing exists, i don't know if it's unconscious or completely conscious, but it's definitely phallocentrism. I think there is definitely a conscious, political and social part to it, that has to do with the fact that men rule on this frigging planet, any way you look at it.

If you ask me, there is no difference in importance. A first time is always a first time no matter who you are with. However, it feels different in quality, so you might as well have two first times: in case you have been both with a man or a woman, or maybe even more first times if you have been with people who are transexual!

dornac είπε...

For a man, there is no physical differences between before and after the first time, but only in the mind, whereas for a woman, the hymen has been broken.
What spiritual interpretation will you make? Let's wonder (joking):
- the man is virgin his whole life whatever he does ?
or
- the man has always been corrupted since the beginning?
;)

And, at the end, you understand that the methods of the dictature has always operated the same way : accusing unfairly the other one to have your own sins, but changing the vocabulary and the meaning of the words or the story to hide it.
Women have always been considered as evil during the history, and in quite all the religions.
Yet, they give life and don't kill as much as men do (is it only a matter of education?).

artemis είπε...

no, it's not only a matter of education, it's probably a matter of testosterone, a matter of pride, a matter of having an erection... any way you want to look at it. how can one get it up if he's feeling inferior and worthless?

dornac είπε...

Yes, you are right,this is a question of hypotalamus, our is much bigger, so more feelings and sensations. ;D

To come back to Artemis, here, a man, Gérad de Nerval, seems to identify her to death, or at least, he thinks that his last love, the Thirteenth, is in the death (in fact, there are many interpretations, I think, of this poem). DEATH : The only place for a man to reach women or to feel like a woman ??? 8D
I have always thought that the couple Eros-Thanatos could only be applied rightly to men, not women, or less, women responding to men.
What do you think ?

artemis είπε...

well to speak personally, I find that it applies to me as well. there are also plenty of examples of women who have used themselves up for the love of a man. so, on one hand, I don't think eros/thanatos is an heterosexual disease that only men can catch :)
on the other hand, who can vouch that I am really playing for the girls team?
as for the hypothalamus, mine is definitely screwed up. my cycle is a mess, i've put on weight insted of losing, and my sleep cycle is for shit. so, maybe i should change teams and apply for manhood? LoL

dornac είπε...

Well, so many women are getting fat after marriage. I don't think the hormons can help.
Personally, it depends on the relationship I have : I am getting fat with people who eat, and I am getting thin with vampires.
Honestly, I prefer people who eat.

artemis είπε...

marriage? hormons? are you refering to someone I know?

well, if it hasn't happened, yet, who's getting married? :D
I definitely am not.
at least not at the moment.

I am currently on a diet. I am cranky and honestly, most of the time I feel kinda depressed. I think I prefer myself when I eat as well...!

I am really dying to hear more about your adventures with the vampires.

dornac είπε...

Diet is a question of habit. It's just a little long to accept it. I suppose there are diets without to many contraints.

With my vampires, I finally flew. But it took a little time before I decided it.
The stories of vampires are -according to me- a little boring, except for sex. There were only sex, finally.
Vampires are mindly sooooo dependant. Boring.
